Roger Downer was born and raised in southern England and moved to Wooster, Ohio, where he works for the Ohio State University conducting research in pesticide application, in 1989. Roger is a graduate of The University of Portsmouth in the UK where he received his Ph.D. in Biology in 1998. His interest in butterflies (and moths) grew out of a childhood exposure to and fascination with the butterflies that were to be seen flying around a butterfly bush in his parents garden and the chance meeting with a moth expert with whose son he attended school. Visits to Africa and the Far East further stimulated his interest in butterflies and an introduction to Professor emeritus Roy Rings (a highly respected and dedicated moth lover) at the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center (OARDC) ensured that the love affair with lepidoptera would continue in the US. Rogers love of gardening is simply a part of being raised in England and the idea of having butterflies come to him rather than having to go find them was one reason that made the idea of butterfly gardening very appealing. Recent articles include a report to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) following a butterfly survey of Ravenna Arsenal, Ravenna, Ohio in 1993, and most recently an OARDC research bulletin co-authored with Roy Rings entitled The Lepidoptera of Wayne County. Roger is a member of the Tropical Lepidopterists Society and The Ohio Lepidopterists. Current projects include the establishment of long term butterfly monitoring transects at the OARDCs Secrest Arboretum and at a local park and the establishment of a group in Wooster the intent of which is to conduct research into the effect of ecosystem management on pollinator diversity. Roger is also working with the curator of the Secrest Arboretum to establish model pollinator gardens utilizing native Ohio plants for public demonstration.
